UNILATERAL CEASE-FIRE
The Tamil rebels have declared a 10-day cease-fire to coincide with the SARC conference.  Could this be the initial faint signs of hope for peace?  Over 70,000 persons have lost their lives in the world’s longest protracted civil war. We pray that there will be peace with justice and dignity for everyone in this beautiful island that is drenched in tears.

COMPUTERS FOR HILL COUNTRY SCHOOL
We have supplied five computers and a printer to improve the IT skills of a needy 400+ strong secondary school. We hope to assist them in several other practical ways in the months to come.

COMPUTERS FOR GIRLS WELFARE HOME
We have installed three computers and a printer to the welfare home in the north.  The senior students of the home as well as the children of the local community will benefit from this facility. The agricultural and vineyard projects completed last year are providing much needed nutrition for the children.

FREE CATARACT SURGERY
A valuable service for the elderly whose quality of life can be transformed by restoring sight and giving them back dignity in the latter days of their lives is being put into action. In partnership with a UK charity “Eyesee” and a local charity in Sri-Lanka, we are planning free cataract surgery for the poor and needy next year.

WIDOWS’ MICRO-LOAN PROJECT
Several young widows have been identified with the resumption of the war in the last two years.  This programme assists young widows to start up a small cottage industry in order to become self sufficient and self reliant in the north of Sri-Lanka – a hand up rather than a hand down. These hapless women are being mentored by experienced persons to put their lives back together again.

ANIMAL HUSBANDRY PROJECT
This new and exciting project to train young men and women to generate income for our projects has commenced in the hill country.  Five acres of land have been cleared and fenced up. Two acres of land have been planted with special fast growing grass seed for the cattle.  The cattle shed will be built shortly and an initial purchase of five Jersey cows is under way. At full production, it is envisaged that 20 Jersey cows will produce 220 litres of milk per week and three truckloads of manure.
