Medical, vision and children welfare clinic October 2009

16 people from the UK will be flying out in October to conduct medical, vision and children welfare clinics in some of the most rural parts of Sri Lanka.

REFUGEE APPEAL IN SRI-LANKA

The Sri-Lanka Government has announced the end game of the military conflict in Sri-Lanka. Over a thousand innocent civilians who had been trapped in the war zone in the north have lost their lives.  The children whom we support in one of the northern orphanages have miraculously escaped with their lives.

Thousands have fled the conflict zone and have arrived in government managed refugee camps in a desperate condition.  Some have arrived literally naked, not having eaten any food for several days, emaciated in body and broken in spirit.  Their trek to “safety” has been through the battle zones, making their way through piles of dead bodies and mangled human remains.

The immediate need is for basic clothing and nutritious food.  Human dignity needs to be restored and lives of these helpless people protected.  Hope needs to dawn for them.  The emotional scars of this civil war will take decades to heal.

The Government authorities have appealed for assistance.

Hope Outreach UK is working with its mission partners on the ground, a Sri-Lanka Government nominated NGO, to bring hope and dignity to these people and make a real difference in their lives now.  There are just over 12,000 refugees in the Jaffna peninsula, 7,000 of them having arrived in the last 5 days!  In Vavuniya there are about 130,000 persons in IDP* camps since February.
