Hope Outreach UK

In the press

GP Dr Sam Muthuveloe doesn't mind making a spectacle of himself – especially if it helps the poor of his beloved Sri Lanka.

Milton Keynes-based Hope Outreach UK charity has worked among the poor of that country for years and for the past five it has been running free vision clinics.

With daily wages as low as £2, people cannot afford eye treatment or glasses to correct vision problems, work-related trauma or infection of the eye made worse by malnutrition.

And for many, poor vision means not being able to work at all.

In October, a team from Hope Outreach is off to Sri Lanka with volunteer health professionals paying their own way and giving their services and time for free.

They will take with them a consignment of secondhand specs.

"We collect them, have them washed, package them and take them with us," said Dr Sam.

Each will have been 'neutralised' on a special machine so their prescription can be matched to patients in Sri Lanka who have been assessed by qualified opticians.

But the team needs MORE glasses and particularly off-the-shelf Ready Readers and high-minus (-10 and above) prescription spectacles.

"Almost everyone who wears glasses will have an old, unused pair lying around somewhere," said Dr Sam.

"Having spectacles to correct their vision opens a new world of hope and opportunities to the people we help.

"Without good vision, their economic, social and personal independent life is greatly compromised," he said.

You can drop off your donated glasses at Dr Sam's surgery at Sovereign Medical Centre, Sovereign Drive, Pennyland, Milton Keynes MK15 8AJ, between 8.00am and 6.30pm

City Thanked for
By Anna Sexton - The Milton Keynes Citizen newspaper, Thursday, April 17th, 2008

People of Milton Keynes have received a hearty thanks from a local charity that has worked to bring aid to the people of Sri Lanka for two decades.
At their 21st birthday celebration last Sunday. Hope Outreach UK workers spoke of the amazing kindness that city residents have shown. Charity founder Dr Sam Muthuveloe: said “Although the occasion was to mark our anniversary, it was also a thanksgiving opportunity and a chance to consider plans for the future.
We all feel very humbled by the help and generosity that the people of Milton Keynes have shown. This even continued when ten people volunteered to bring their skills to the charity - and to help the people of Sri Lanka.
“Four cows were also donated at the event - which brings us close to our target of twenty Jersey cows to take out to Sri Lanka and provide two hundred and twenty litres of fresh milk every week.
Along with the Mayor and Mayoress Mike and Cheryl Barry, more than two hundred people went to the celebration at Lovatt Hall in Newport Pagnell, where they saw and heard inspiring, eye-opening presentations by Hope Outreach volunteers.
“It was one of our best public meetings,” said Dr Sam. “As well as thanking everyone, we gave talks about the work we done so far - and raised challenges for the times ahead.”
The charity began in the early 1980’s after civil war broke out in Sri Lanka. Since then it has brought a wide range of practical, social and medical help to the communities affected by civil war, as well as supporting those affected by the 2004 tsunami.
